According to the official statement by the Media Manager of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, Mr Precious Okolobo, the auto introduced by the the University of Benin students thus qualified to race at the 2014 Eco Marathon in Netherlands, which is to be held on May 17.
Meanwhile another Nigerian car, made by the students from the University of Lagos is reportedly still in process of technical evaluation, the result of which will be known on Friday.
The statement reads in part:
"Shell Eco-marathon challenges student teams from around the world to design, build and test ultra-energy efficient vehicles. The winners are the teams that go the furthest using the least amount of energy... All cars are expected to pass a strict technical inspection to check that they are fit for purpose and safe before they are allowed to race."
It was also mentioned that according to the marathon criteria the best car is the one that would drive farthest with the least amount of fuel.
The Chief Executive Officer of Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Mr Ben Van Beurden, congratulated the Nigerian students saying that the country, saying:
"The energy, the enthusiasm and the innovation that has taken place, and the fact that we have a Nigerian team here participating is an incredibly milestone."
